Surface area to be cultivated with wheat in Egypt in 2023 to be 4M feddans

CAIRO – 24 October 2023: Chairman of the Farmers Syndicate Abdel Rahman Abou Sadam indicated in a press statement Tuesday that the surface area to be cultivated with wheat in the upcoming season, taking place in November and December, had been estimated to be four million feddans (one feddan equals 4,500 square meters).

Abou Saddam pointed out that Egypt currently grows only 50 percent of its consumption of wheat, and that the Ministry of Agriculture was keen - as incentives -on providing farmers with high-quality seeds, and expanding the distribution of subsidized fertilizers.

That is in addition to raising the price of the ardeb, purchased by the Ministry of Supply to produce subsidized bread, from LE1,750-1,800 to LE2,000.

The Ministry of Finance allocated in April LE45 billion to the purchase of local wheat from Egyptian farmers in 2023, with an increase of more than LE19 billion, compared to the previous year.
