CAIRO - 19 October 2023: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held discussions with his British counterpart, James Cleverly, to address the escalating military situation in Gaza and explore ways to de-escalate the conflict. The meeting took place during James Cleverly's regional tour to consult with counterparts in the Middle East on the crisis and humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesperson and Director of General Diplomacy at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the talks between the two ministers involved frank and comprehensive exchanges of views on the current crisis and potential strategies for resolution. Shoukry stressed the importance of coordinated international efforts to prioritize de-escalation and an immediate ceasefire.

Shoukry emphasized the necessity of international parties compelling both sides to prioritize de-escalation and abide by international humanitarian law, including avoiding civilian casualties. He further underscored the risks of the conflict spreading to other areas in the region, highlighting the importance of regional and international peace and security.

Abu Zeid added that the ministers dedicated a significant portion of their discussions to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. They agreed on the critical and immediate need to deliver humanitarian aid and relief to the people of Gaza in light of the ongoing crisis. This aid must be provided in a sustainable and secure manner.

Shoukry also cautioned against the consequences of continuing Israeli military operations, which could lead to further deterioration of the humanitarian situation and the destructive effects of collective punishment policies, such as blockades and forced displacement. He stressed the international community's responsibility to protect civilians.

On his part, the British Foreign Minister expressed his appreciation for Egypt's efforts at all levels to de-escalate tensions between the Israeli and Palestinian sides. He commended Egypt's coordination of international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. He also welcomed Egypt's initiative in calling for a peace summit and expressed hopes for its success in finding solutions to the ongoing escalation and future stability.

In conclusion, the spokesperson reiterated Minister Shoukry's emphasis on addressing the root causes of the current crisis. This includes addressing the loss of hope and the lack of a political horizon for a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue. Shoukry affirmed that achieving peace in the region is a strategic necessity and the choice of the peoples of the Middle East.
