President Sisi meets Putin on sidelines of 2nd Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg

CAIRO – 26 July 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi met on Wednesday with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit held in St. Petersburg.

During the meeting, Russian President Putin noted that in a nearly month from now, Egypt and Russia will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He added that ‘during those past years, relations between the two countries gained a special character, and ‘achieved great success.’

Putin also noted that Russia and Egypt have ‘promising projects’ in various sectors, and that ‘the volume of trade exchange between the two countries has witnessed significant growth’.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi thanked Putin for his invitation to participate in the summit, adding that Egypt has always been keen to meet Russia’s invitations in regard of cooperation between the two counties in all sectors.

President Sisi expressed his appreciation for Russia’s support to Egypt in establishing the Dabaa nuclear power plant, describing it as a ‘giant and pioneering project’, of which Russia’s support for it is ‘very clear’

Sisi also thanked Putin for Russia’s support to Egypt establishing other projects including the Russian industrial energy project and the logistics area

“I would also like to extend my congratulations on the passage of 80 years of the Egyptian-Russian relations” Sisi said to Putin.

“I remember the great interest with which the 2019-African summit was met, and I am sure this summit too will have great results” Sisi said.
