CAIRO - 11 June 2023: Russian Ambassador in Cairo Georgiy Borisenko affirmed the strategic nature of ties binding Egypt and Russia.


In statements on the occasion marking Russia's national day which falls on June 12, he also referred to the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Egypt and Russia, which entered into force in 2021.

The bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Russia covers political, economic, military, cultural and scientific spheres, he added.

Egypt and Russia will celebrate on August 26 the 80th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between the two countries, the Russian diplomat went on to say.

The ambassador said that Russia is the largest foreign supplier to the Egyptian wheat market, having provided as many as 5.9 million tons to the North African country.

Russia also intends to hand over another 3 million tons of wheat by June 30, he further said.

Talking about tourism, the ambassador said that three daily flights between Cairo and Moscow are operated, as well as charter planes from the Russian cities to the Egyptian resorts.

Egypt ranked the second most popular foreign destination for Russian tourists, he said, noting that as many as 1 million tourists visited Egypt in 2022.

The number is expected increase this year, he went on to say.

He, meanwhile, said that the number of Egyptian students studying in Russian universities stands at 16,000, noting that several Russian higher education institutions want to open branches in Egypt.
