CAIRO – 21 October 2022: Egypt has so far released 1,040 pretrial detainees and 12 convicts since the reactivation of the Presidential Pardon Committee on 26 April, human rights lawyer Tarek El-Awady said on Thursday.

Since April, the state has also worked on integrating the released detainees into society and providing them with job opportunities, Awady, a member of the committee, said.

Also, hundreds of male and female debtors have been released, Awady added.

Egyptian authorities released on Thursday a new batch of 35 pretrial detainees among hundreds who have been released over the past months since the reactivation of the Presidential Pardon Committee in April.

Awady posted pictures for the pretrial detainees who were released yesterday.

Egypt has released hundreds of inmates over the past month since President Sisi called for a national dialogue in April, including pretrial detainees and pardoned inmates.

The Presidential Pardon Committee, formed in 2016 and reactivated by Sisi in April, aims to release young prisoners of conscience and reintegrate them into society.

The Egyptian Prosecution’s decisions to release a number of pretrial detainees give further momentum to the National Dialogue, said dialogue coordinator, Diaa Rashwan.

In remarks during his TV program “Masr Jadida” on ETC, Rashwan said the prosecution’s decisions encourage further parties of different orientations to conduct the dialogue.

He added that the next period will see consecutive releases.
