CAIRO – 17 March 2022: Egypt would declare Sharm el-Sheikh city of South Sinai, where the COP 27 conference would convene in November, a city free from single-use plastic bags in June, said the Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad during a meeting with Japanese ambassador to Egypt Oka Hiroshi on Wednesday.

The Minister added the ministry would also launch the National Climate Dialogue at the end of March, with the aim of engaging citizens in the process of combating climate change impacts by providing an opportunity for the local community of Sharm El Sheikh to choose the appropriate alternatives to those bags.

The meeting between Fouad and the Japanese ambassador tackled aspects of bilateral cooperation in reducing plastic waste and climate projects, in preparation for hosting of the COP27 conference.

Japanese Ambassador Oka Hiroshi stressed his country's keenness to continue fruitful cooperation with Egypt, especially in the field of reducing plastic waste and using advanced technologies, within the framework of the “G20 Osaka Blue Ocean Vision.”
