On 29 August 2020, Mahmoud Ezzat got arrested during a security raid on an apartment in Cairo after having been on the run for seven years.
In the retrial, the court also fined the convicts LE17,622,022 (US$ 1,1 million), meanwhile, four other defendants were acquitted.
Ezzat, along with Muslim Brotherhood leader Khairat Al-Shater and 13 others, was sentenced to death on July 16, 2015, for charges of spying for Hamas.
Shafiq, along with two other defendants [former CEO of EgyptAir company Mohamed Assi and former Minister of Civil Aviation Ibrahim Mannaa], is facing charges of signing a protocol to illegally grants more than LE 23 million to a non-governmental organization.
On April 7, 2013, a Cairo criminal court acquitted the three defendants of the charges. However, the public prosecution appealed against the ruling since then.
The charges included embezzling at least 493.628 million, after they decided to sell Al Watany Bank of Egypt for profiteering via selling the bank assets in the stock exchange.
The court handed down a life imprisonment sentence to a defendant, 15 years in prison to14 others, and 7 years to a defendant. The court also acquitted a co-defendant.
A Minya Criminal Court acquitted seven defendants of charges of killing and inciting violence in a case dubbed in media as “Retrial of El-Idwa Incidents” on Saturday.
As per the Attorney-General’s order, surveillance cameras in the courtroom were impounded. Also, the medical report of Morsi’s condition was impounded.
The decision was made to complete hearing the defense pleadings.
