CAIRO-3 October 2020: Al Ahly new South African manager Pitso Mosimane expressed his happiness to be Al Ahly’s first team coach as he signed a contract with the Red Eagles for two years.

The South African became the first African non-Egyptian coach to coach the African Club of the Century.

“It is a big opportunity for me to join Al Ahly. It is a big club and it is an honor for me to join the Red Eagles. I have much respect for the team and the badge.” The South African told the club’s official website.

Mosimane succeeded Swiss head coach, Rene Weiler, who coached the team this season and led them to win the Egyptian league title and took them to the semi-finals of CAF Champions League and the quarter finals of the Egyptian Cup.

Mosimane added “Al Ahly players have good character, good spirit and they have a winning mentality and they fight for winning. But all the big teams in the world have good things and have other things to improve.”

Mosimane is one of the best coaches in the continent and he has much experience in CAF champions League, having led his former club Mamelodi Sundowns to win the CAF Champions League title in 2016.

Asked about leaving Sundowns after 8 years of coaching the team, he said” Football managers are professionals, as Pep Guardiola left Spain and went to Germany then England, where the cultures and the languages are different so I can do this. Football is an international game and you can follow it wherever you are.”

Mosimane’s Sundowns have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League this season by Al Ahly in the quarter-finals.

Al Ahly fans aim that the South African manager can lead the team to achieve the most prestigious title in the continent for the 9th time in the club’s history.
