CAIRO – 29 June 2017: Germany U21 National Team qualified Tuesday for UEFA European under 21 Championship final after beating England by penalties. Germans kept their habit of beating England in knockout stage matches, where English important victories over Germany were only in WW2 and in 1966 final, but since then Germans won every knockout match against England and prevented them from many titles.
4- Germany comeback
The English won their only World Cup title in 1966 after beating the Germans in the final, 4 years later in 1970 World Cup in Mexico, both met in the quarter finals.
England was leading 2-0 till the last 20 minutes of the match, but two goals from Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler took the match to extra time.
Gerd Muller, West Germany striker scored a goal in the 108th minute to send England home and qualify Germany to the semifinal.
3- Gazza tears
England had a great campaign in 1990 World Cup in Italy; they had a great team managed by Bobby Robson with great players like Gary Lineker, John Barnes and Paul Gascoigne also known as 'Gazza’.
They played West Germany in the semi-final, English fans had so much hope for their team especially in the young midfielder Gascoigne. Germans opened the score in the second half by Andreas Brehme but Lineker equalized the score before the final whistle.
The match went to extra time when Gascoigne got yellow card that meant he will not be able to play the final if England qualified, he started crying on the pitch for missing the final.
England lost the match in penalties and all English players missed the final like Gascoigne.
2 – Southgate missed penalty
England faced Germany again at UEFA EURO 96 semi-final; the competition hosted by England made the match more special for English fans.
The match ended 0-0 after missing many chances from both sides, the match went to penalties.
As usual it was a nightmare for England after current England Manager, Gareth Southgate, lost the sixth penalty and Germany qualified for the final.
1 – Lampard disallowed goal
The last match two teams played against each other in knockout stage was in 2010 World Cup round of 16 in South Africa.
Germans led the match after scoring two goals by Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski but Matthew Upson scored a goal for England and seconds after the goal Frank Lampard scored the equalizer but the referee saw that the ball did not cross the line and disallowed the goal.
Germany scored another two goals in the second half to win the match 4-1.
England looks to Germany as their main rivals, not only in football, and losing against them in such big events is a bitter loss.
