CAIRO – 28 June 2017: The German and the Spanish national teams qualified for the final of the UEFA European Under 21 Championships after beating England and Italy, respectively, on June 27.
Tuesday night saw a dramatic ending for England’s national team - getting knocked out of the tournament by Germany via penalty kicks. Davie Selke opened the score for the Germans in the 35th minute. However, England reacted quickly and managed to score a goal in the 41st minute by Demarai Gray. The second half started with Chelsea’s youth talent Tammy Abraham scoring the leading goal for England in the 50th minute. The Germans didn’t lose hope and were able to extend the match to extra time by scoring an equalizer in the 70th minute by Felix Platte. The match went to extra time where both teams had several chances but were brilliantly saved by the goalkeepers. The match went to penalty shoot-outs were the German goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck saved two penalties to help Germany reach the final, gaining a 4-3 victory in penalties.
On the other side of the semi-finals, Spain qualified for the final with a 3-1 victory over Italy. The first half saw many opportunities to score for both teams; however; the two goalkeepers managed to maintain a clean sheet throughout the first half. The start of the second half saw a goal scored by Saul Niguez in the 53rd minute to give the lead to the Spanish team. The Italians did not wait for long and were able to score in the 62nd minute by Federico Bernardeschi. Saul Niguez stole the show once again by scoring his second goal on the 65th minute before completing a hat trick on the 74th minute. Italy failed to score in the remaining minutes of the match to make the final result a 3-1 victory for Spain.
With these results Germany’s U-21 team will face Spain on Friday June 30 at 8:45 PM Egyptian time.
