CAIRO – 26 June 2017: After Mohamed Salah’s signing with Liverpool, the Egyptian national team player chose to wear the number 11 jersey.
Egypt Today decided to look at the history of great players who wore the number 11 jersey for Liverpool.
Robbie Fowler, Liverpool’s iconic striker, is one of the greatest players ever to wear number 11 (before switching to number 9). Fowler managed to score a total of 183 goals during his career. Fowler was able to win the UEFA Cup (Europa League) in 2001 along with winning the Premier League Cup and FA Cup with the club.
Vladimir Smicer, winner of the 2005 Champions League, also wore the number 11 jersey. The Czech international player is remembered for his long shot against Dida in the 2005 Champions League final versus AC Milan. This goal against Dida contributed to a historic comeback which later gave the title to Liverpool.
Jamie Redknapp, the former midfielder of Tottenham Hostpur and Liverpool FC, sported number 11 during his time with Liverpool. Redknapp was able to score 41 goals with Liverpool. Redknapp is the son of the former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp; his father is considered to be one of the most influential coaches of modern English football.
Argentinean international winger Maxi Rodriguez also wore number 11 with Liverpool. During his time at the club he managed to win the 2012 League Cup. Rodriguez played with Argentina in several World Cups.
The last player to wear the number 11 jersey was Brazilian Roberto Firmino, who joined Liverpool at the start of the 2015/2016 football season coming from Hoffenheim. Firmino scored 23 goals with Liverpool while wearing number 11.
Next season, Mohamed Salah will have the opportunity to wear the number 11 jersey that some of the greatest Liverpool players have worn. We expect Salah to rise to the occasion as usual and produce some unbelievable assists and goals while wearing the number 11 shirt.
