CAIRO_7 May 2020: The German Football League (DFL) announces on Thursday that Bundesliga season will restart on Saturday 16 May, to become the first major European league to return to action.

"The interest [globally] is big. I see reports from across the world that we are the first major league to return." Christian Seifert, chief executive of DFL, said.

The league, which has been suspended since 13 March, returns under strict health measures, including banning fans from the stadium as only 300 people are allowed to be in or around the stadium.

Seifert added "The matches will feel different. After the first matchday, we will all know why we prefer games with fans. But that is the framework we have to operate in and I expect the best possible sport within this framework."

The opening day of the Bundesliga contains 6 games, including the fierce derby between Schalke and Borussia Dortmund.

Two games will be played on Sunday, while Werder Bremen will host Bayer Leverkusen on Monday at the closing game of the round.
