England 1966 world cup – FIFA world cup facebook page
CAIRO –21 June 2017: Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is the new topic among football fans after its impact on matches’ results at FIFA Confederation Cup held in Russia; since VAR reviews a referee’s decisions and helps him to take the right ones in the matches.
FIFA approved to use VAR in a meeting on June 2016, however started using it in FIFA competitions like FIFA Club World Cup 2016 in Japan, FIFA World Cup U19 in South Korea and now in FIFA Confederation Cup in Russia.
Referees are the weak side in the game, they always receive criticism from players and fans; their mistakes could change results of decisive games or led teams to titles. Would have teams kept their title, won the matches or would have lost them in the presence of VAR?
Hypothetically what if VAR was used before?
3- Madrid’s failure
Last season was Madrid’s best season in decades, they won the Champions League to be the first team to win the competition for 2 years in a row, they also won the league after 5 years of losing it. But Madrid got many benefits from referee mistakes in the league matches. They got many points and their rival Barcelona lost some games due to referee’s decisions, and in the second leg of Champions League quarter finals against Bayern Munich, referee’s horrible decision affected the game and Madrid qualified to the semifinals and continued their journey to the title.
If VAR was used last season, Madrid would have lost their precious titles and Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid manager, will be searching now for another team to manage.
2- England loses their only world cup title
England invented the game but they won the World Cup only once in 1966 in the tournament played on their land. England faced Germany in the final, which went to extra time after 2-2 draw. England striker Geoff Hurst scored the third goal which caused so many controversy till now. Germans till now claims that Hurst shot did not cross the line and this goal helped England to win its only World Cup title.
If VAR was used in that time, Germans would win and 1966 would be the worst English memory in Football.
1 – Maradona’s legacy would have been 4 years later
The 1986 World Cup in Mexico is remembered for Maradona’s amazing performance that led Argentina to the title for the second time in history, but was also remembered for Maradona hand ball goal against England.
Maradona, 165 cm, jumped over English goal keeper Peter Shilton, 183 cm, and used his hand to score the goal and the match referee did not watch the incident.
But in 1990 World Cup in Italy, Argentina lost the final to Germany by a controversial penalty in the last minutes of the game.
If VAR was used in Maradona’s era, he would have lost the world cup in 1986 and would have won it 4 years later.
Referee mistakes are part of the game and it has a great impact on Football history.
