CAIRO – 20 June 2017: While team coaches and managers are often fired for losing, it’s not common to hear of a coach fired for winning – but that’s exactly what happened last week to the coach of an under-11 team.

Serrano B U11’s youth coach, whose name was not mentioned in the media, was sacked on June 15 after his side won a match against Benicalap C 25-0. The winning team’s coach was fired for lack of respect to the other team; the team’s board felt the win was not sportsmanlike.

"We believe in encouraging respect for your opponents. After the result, we decided that the manager should leave," Pablo Alcaide of the Spanish club told El Pais.

Alcaide added that the coach “didn’t manage the situation well,” referring to the fact that he allowed his team to score 23 points when their opponents had not scored a single goal.

Benicalap club, based in Valencia, collected no points during the season and concedes 247 goals, according to Independent.com

The coach’s lawyer, Daniel Revenga, defended his client, saying, “he told [the team] to stop pressuring their opponents. But Benicalap C, who had no substitutes, continued attacking and left too many spaces,” sportspible.com reported.
