CAIRO – 5 December 2019: Al-Ahly club witnessed a historic night on Wednesday as the club President, Mahmoud El Khatib, announced that Al-Ahly agreed on a 25-year lease of Al Salam Stadium.
This decision is a milestone for the biggest club in Africa and millions of passionate fans who always dreamed of having their own stadium.
Al-Ahly will use the stadium for its home games in line with their plans to build a 60,000 seater arena.
Throughout Al-Ahly’s 112 history, the club used to play their home games at Mokhtar El Tetsh Stadium till the late 60s then the club moved to play in bigger stadiums like Cairo International Stadium, Borg El Arab Stadium, Petro Sport Stadium and Al Salam Stadium.
The new decision will help the club reduce its costs of rental of stadia, costs of travelling and training venues outside of the capital.
Al Salam Stadium was built in 2009 for the FIFA U-20 World Cup and also hosted 10 games at 2019 Africa Cup of Nations including the third place play-off.
Al-Ahly will play their first game at their new home on Friday when Al-Ahly face Sudan’s Al Hilal at CAF Champions League Group Stage.
