CAIRO - 10 September 2019: The World Surf League (WSL), having been championing the world's best surfing since 1976, was announced to enter the quarterfinals of the 25th Siargao International Surfing Cup, which attracted a huge crowd at the famous Cloud 9 surfing club.
Thirteen world-class surfing professionals took part in the tournament, which began last Saturday and lasted for three days.
Surfer John Mark “Marama” Tokong has successfully defeated U.S. champion Skip McCullough in the last elimination round for the International Surfing Cup.
McCulllough finished with a total combined points of 12.10, while Tokong claimed 12.75 points.
The event, which was broadcast at Worldsurfingleague.com, is supported by the Phillipine Sports Commission (PSC), headed by Chairman William Butch Ramirez, Jeep Phillippines, and the Department of Tourism.
The competition is especially important because surfing is now part of the 2020 Olympics. “The event will give our local surfers much-needed exposure and will help them earn points to qualify for the quadrennial event. Surfing is a sport in which our locals have excelled in. With the proper training and funding, our surfers can help us clinch an Olympic medal,” said Rep. Francisco “Bingo” Matugas.
“Considering that this year is the 25th anniversary of the Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, we would like to make the event grander and more memorable. We recognize that we cannot do it alone. Globe's valuable support will surely ensure the competition's success,” he added.
“With the QS ranking, surfers are expecting more WQS points, giving competitors a chance to gain higher overall WQS ranking points. Everyone wants a slice of the points, the prize money is more of an added icing on the cake,” said Gerry Degan, event director
Degan pointed out that the winning surfer will bring home $5,000, while the second spot with $3,000 and then $1,500 for the third spot.
Steve Robertson, general manager of the World Surf League Asia, has described the Siargao International as an iconic event that will draw the best surfers in one of the last QS1 500 events in Asia.
“We are happy that this event has continued right here where the most perfect waves in the planet are and the WSL is honored to be part of it,” Mr. Robertson added.
