CAIRO – 10 July 2019: Senegal’s Sadio Mane trusts his team’s ability to defeat Benin at the quarter finals and complete their journey towards achieving 2019 African Cup of Nations title.
“We know what we are capable of. We are Senegal and we are here to win the trophy.” Mane told reporters on Tuesday.
Senegal defeated Uganda 1-0 on the round of 16 to face Benin at the quarter finals.
Mane added “Do not underestimate this Benin team that had a good tournament. I know some players from Benin who are friends and I know it's a team that will do everything to pass the quarter-finals.”
Benin surprised football fans when they knocked out the tournament’s favorites, Morocco, on penalties.
Mane, 2019 UEFA Champions League winner, hopes to lead Senegal to win their first ever AFCON title.
Senegal manager, Aliou Cissé, praised Mane’s attitude after he stepped down as Senegal’s first-choice penalty taker after missing two penalties at the tournament.
“Mané is fighting for the team. He is a player who understands that the team goes above persons. We are ambitious and we know that we can go far in this competition.” Cisse said.
