FILE - Sundowns' player scores the second goal in Al-Ahly's net
CAIRO - 8 April 2019: The most pessimistic Al-Ahly fan could have never expected what happened against South Africa's Sundowns on Saturday which threw the club's African hopes away.
Sundowns thrashed Al-Ahly 5-0 in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
It's the biggest defeat in Al-Ahly's history in the non-domestic competitions. The Red Devils have never been subjected to this kind of result in any African or Arabian competition since 1911, when the club was founded.
Al-Ahli started the match with the formation: Mohamed al-Shennawi; Mohamed Hani, Ayman Ashraf, Saad Samir and Ali Maaloul; Amr Soleya, Ahmed Fathi and Karim Nedved; Ramadan Sobhi, Junior Ajayi and Marwan Mohsen.
Ali Lotfi, Hussein al-Shahat, Nasser Maher, Yasser Ibrahim, Salah Mohsen, Hamdi Fathi and Waleed Azzaro were on the bench.
The second-leg will be played next Saturday in Egypt at Borg El-Arab stadium, where Al-Ahly needs to win by six goals to qualify for the next round.
