Lasarte during his presentation as Al-Ahly new manager, Egypt Today
CAIRO – 17 December 2018: Al-Ahly introduced their new Uruguayan manager, Martín Lasarte, to media on Monday afternoon at a press conference held in the club. The manager announced that he will be in charge of the team by the end of December.
“Al-Ahly is one of the greatest teams in Africa with a giant history and big dreams. I came here to win and we have everything that will help us achieve titles,” Lasarte told press.
Lasarte's career was full of achievements, especially in South America, as he led Nacional de Monteviedo to two consecutive national championships in 2005 and 2006.
Lasarte added, "I used to work under pressure. I managed Nacional de Monteviedo and it is one of the biggest teams in the world. It is a coincidence that Nacional in Spanish means Al-Ahly in Arabic."
During his time at Nacional, Lasarte discovered Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez, who spent two years at the club before leaving to play in Europe and he is now the starting striker for FC Barcelona.
He also managed Real Sociedead from 2009 to 2012 and achieved the Chilean Primera Division, Copa Chile and Super Copa de Chile with Universidad Chile.
Asked about the difficulties he expects in his first experience as a manager in Africa, Lasarte said “Previously, I faced the challenge to manage a top team for the first time and the challenge to work in Europe for the first time. here's a first time for everything.”
Lasarte is set to attend Al-Ahly's match against El-Negoum on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 7 p.m. CLT.
