CAIRO – 20 November 2018: Liverpool Egyptian winger, Mohamed Salah, has the chance to win the BBC African Player of the Year Award for the second year in a row, as he was shortlisted for the award this year.
Salah was shortlisted alongside his Senegalese teammate in Liverpool Sadio Mane, Moroccan defender Medhi Benatia, Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey.
Salah clinched the award last season and he could be the second player in history to win it twice in a row following Nigeria’s Jay-Jay Okocha who won the award in 2003 and 2004.
Nigeria’s Nwankwo Kanu and Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure also won it twice but not in consecutive years.
Salah has had an amazing season with Liverpool as he led his team to UEFA Champions League Final against Real Madrid but he only played 25 minutes and left the pitch suffering an injury and followed his team’s 3-1 loss from the stands.
The Egyptian scored 44 goals last season at all competitions, including 32 goals at the league that granted him the Premier League Golden Boot award.
This season, Salah suffered a frustrating start with his team but he regained his form and scored six goals at the league for Liverpool.
