CAIRO – 15 May 2018: Joachim Loew’s contract has been renewed to serve as German national team’s coach until the 2022 World Cup, the German Football Association announced Tuesday at a press conference held to reveal the preliminary squad list for the upcoming World Cup.

The German FA decided to extend the 2014 World Cup winner’s contract until 2022, as it’s supposed to end after Euro 2020.

Loew’s chosen squad came with a number of surprises, as he decided to include Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, although he isn’t ready yet, as some press reports said that he’s not fully recovered from the injury he had suffered last September. Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus was among Loew’s surprises, as the coach didn’t rely on him in his entire career with the national team, as the player always suffers from injuries before the national tournaments such as the World Cup and Euro.

The preliminary list missed two of the most important players in Germany – Borussia Dortmund forward Mario Gotze, who scored the 2014 World Cup winning goal over Argentina in the final, and Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner.

Joachim Loew has chosen 27 players and is supposed to exclude four players before sending the final squad list for the World Cup by June 4. The squad list is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona, Spain) and Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain, France).

Defenders: Matthias Ginter (Borussia Monchengladbach), Jonas Hector (Cologne), Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Niklas Sule and Joshua Kimmich (all Bayern Munich), Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin), Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea, England), and Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen).

Midfielders/forwards: Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (Paris Saint-Germain, France), Mario Gomez (Vfb Stuttgart), Leon Goretzka (Schalke 04), Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane (Manchester City, England), Sami Khedira (Juventus, Italy), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid, Spain), Thomas Muller and Sebastien Rudy (both Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal, England), Nils Petersen (SC Freiburg), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), and Timo Werner (RB Leipzig).
