CAIRO – 5 May 2018: Turki Al-Sheikh, head of the General Authority for Saudi Sport, refused to accept the position of Zamalek SC's honorary president.
Zamalek’s president, Mortada Mansour, announced on Saturday in a press conference that he was to appoint Al-Sheikh as honorary presidency of Zamalek.
Al-Sheikh’s official Facebook page released a statement declaring that Al-Sheikh is proud to be given this position but apologizes that he is unable to take the position owing to his love for Zamalek’s eternal rival, Al-Ahly.
The statement read, “The office of Mr. Turki Al-Sheikh in Cairo expresses his appreciation for all the sentiments expressed by the members and the board of directors and the president of Zamalek Club, which is certainly respected and appreciated. However, the chancellor apologizes for not accepting the honorable presidency of Zamalek Club; he is a fan and lover of Al-Ahly club.”
Al-Ahly’s president, Mahmoud el-Khatib, gave the honorary presidency position at Al-Ahly SC to Turki Al-Sheikh last December; he is considered one of Al-Ahly’s biggest fans.
Al-Sheikh helped Al-Ahly to sign current striker Salah Mohsen. He also promised to fund building Al-Ahly’s stadium.
