CAIRO – 24 April 2018: Ahead of their match against Liverpool in the first-leg match of the UEFA Champions League semi-final, Roma players made a respectful gesture on Monday, as they laid flowers at Anfield Stadium in memory of the Hillsborough victims.

The players were headed by former Roma player Francesco Totti and current captain Daniele Di Rossi, who put the flowers on the memorial with a card that read, “In the memory of Hillsborough... AS Roma.”

Roma’s visit to the memorial came because of the 29thanniversary of the disaster that occurred on April 15, 1989. The Hillsborough disaster led to 96 fatalities and 766 injuries during the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in the semi-final of the FA Cup. It happened due to the mismanagement of stadium officials and closing the stadium entrances.
