Lakers' Thomas set to undergo hip surgery

Los Angeles Lakers guard Isaiah Thomas will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome right hip Thursday in New York, the team announced on Wednesday.

"We will be doing a minimally invasive procedure to 'clean up' the joint of all inflammatory debris related to his injury from last season," Dr. Bryan Kelly said in a statement to ESPN.

Thomas' hip woes have limited him to just 32 games this season after making his debut as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jan. 2. He was dealt to the Lakers ahead of the February trade deadline and had played in 17 straight games for the team before being sidelined on Saturday.

The 29-year-old's hip trouble began in last season's Eastern Conference finals when he was a member of the Boston Celtics. He was shut down two games into the series with a right femoral-acetabular impingement with labral tear. Thomas opted to not have surgery on his hip over the offseason.

There was no timetable for his recovery. Thomas had sat out the previous two games.

With the regular season winding down, attention soon will turn to Thomas' potential future with the team.

The Lakers and coach Luke Walton are said to be fans of Thomas and consider him a good fit with the young club, but are also expected to be chasing potential marquee free agents Paul George and LeBron James this summer.

The Lakers would have to clear up cap room -- including renouncing Thomas' deal -- but would potentially be interested in bringing him back on a one-year deal if those deals fail to materialize, per ESPN.

Thomas has averaged 15.2 points and 4.8 assists per game this season.
