CAIRO – 19 March 2018: After signing a new contract with Al-Ahly, defender Ahmed Fathy revealed on Monday that he hopes to achieve the three big competitions with the club this season.
“We have achieved the League, and we have to focus on the Cup and the CAF Champions League to win both titles and achieve the triplet this season,” Fathy told Al-Ahly’s official website on Monday.
Al-Ahly has achieved the Egyptian League title six weeks before the end of the season and they will face El-Dakhleya in the round of 16 of the Egypt Cup.
Fathy, 34, spoke about the difficulties the team faced against Mounana in Gabon, saying, “It was a very difficult game and we did everything to achieve the victory despite the high temperature and humidity.”
Al-Ahly reached the CAF Champions League group stage after defeating Gabon’s Mounana 7-1 on aggregate. Al-Ahly won the first leg 4-0 in Cairo before achieving a 3-1 victory in Gabon that secured qualification.
Al-Ahly has a record eight CAF Champions League titles, but they have failed to achieve the title since 2013.
Asked about the national team’s participation in the World Cup in Russia, Fathy said, “The draw put us in a tough group, but we will do everything to reach as far as we can in the competition.”
Egypt plays in Group A alongside Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and the host nation, Russia.
