CAIRO – 19 March 2018: Zamalek SC tasted the bitter taste of loss as they were kicked out of the CAF Confederation Cup at the hands of Ethiopia’s Welayta Dicha.

Zamalek have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday after losing the penalty shootout against Ethiopia's Welayta Dicha in the 32nd round despite a 2-1 lead after the first 90 minutes.

Zamalek lost 1-2 in the first leg in Ethiopia and this time hosted Welayta Dicha at Al-Salam stadium seeking only a (1-0) score to qualify to the next round.

The white team’s 2-1 lead over Welayta Dicha in the first 90 minutes wasn’t enough, putting the score at (3-3) on aggregate. The penalty shootout was needed to split the two teams, but Zamalek’s midfielders Ayman Hefny and Mahmoud Abdel Aziz missed their two shots, eliminating Zamalek from the African Championship.

Zamalek's journey in the African championship ended this year against an obscure team who managed to exploit Zamalek's mistakes, achieving a historic qualification to the next round.

The only tournament left that Zamalek can hope to win this year is the “Egypt Cup”, where Zamalek will face El-Intag Al-Harby in the quarter-finals.

Zamalek are battling for second place in the Egyptian league to participate in the CAF Champions League next season.
