CAIRO – 13 February 2018: The Egyptian national team’s goalkeeping coach, Ahmed Nagy, called Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy for the national team camp next March, alongside Essam El-Hadary, Ahmed El-Shennawi and Mohamed Awad.
Shennawy, 29, earned this call after a stunning performance with Al-Ahly since he established himself as the team’s starting goalkeeper over Sherif Ekramy.
“My dream is to represent the national team at the World Cup in Russia. I am giving everything on the pitch to achieve this dream,” Shennawy told press after he participated in Al-Ahly’s 5-2 victory over Arab Contractors on Monday.
Following criticism of Ekramy for his poor performance in the CAF Champions League, Al-Ahly manager Hossam el-Badry has counted on Shennawy as a starting goalkeeper.
However, Shennawy revealed that he has a good relationship with Ekramy. He said, “Ekramy is like my brother and he always supports me. The good relationship between Al-Ahly’s goalkeepers is a key to our success.”
Shennawy earned Al-Ahly fans’ hearts when he saved a penalty during the Cairo Derby against Zamalek, leading his team to a 3-0 victory over their local rivals.
Shennawy is an Al-Ahly academy product and he joined the club in 2002 when he was 14, getting promoted through the club rankings until he left the club in 2009 to join el-Gaish, where he spent three years.
Shennawy then joined Petrojet in 2012 and established himself as their starting goalkeeper until he returned to Al-Ahly in July 2016.
