Mason announces retirement following collision with Cahill

CAIRO – 13 February 2018: Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason announced his retirement from football on Tuesday after receiving medical advice to stop playing.

“I have worked tirelessly in order to be able to return to the pitch. Unfortunately, having taken expert medical advice, I now have no option but to retire due to the risks involved, given the nature of my injury,” Mason told press on Tuesday.




Mason, 26, suffered a fractured skull after a crash with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill during Chelsea’s game against Hull City in the Premier League last season, and he has not been allowed to play since the accident.



“Ryan would like to put on record his thanks to all at the club who have aided his recovery to this point, and he his is indebted to them for their support and compassion over the past 12 months," Hull City club said in a statement.

Mason is a Tottenham Hotspurs academy product, having joined the club when he was eight, and he got promoted through the club rankings until he joined the first team in 2008 at the age of 17.

Mason spent the next five years on loans to lower division clubs to gain experience, and he returned to Tottenham in 2014 and played two years with the club before leaving to Hull City in 2016.

Mason spoke about his days at Tottenham, saying, “I am so proud to have come through the ranks to play for my club – the club I love. To have had the honor of captaining the team fills me with immense pride.”

Mason played only one game with the England senior team against Italy in 2015.
