CAIRO – 6 February 2018: Jupp Heynckes, coach of Bayern Munich, is convinced that Real Madrid still has a long way to go this season and much more in the 2017/2018 Champions League.
Heynckes, who previously led Real Madrid to win a Champions League title, remarked that, despite not going through a good time, "Real Madrid is favorite against Paris Saint Germain."
In an exclusive interview with Goal website, Heynckes said, "Nevertheless, you must not write off Real in the Champions League. They have much more experience than Paris Saint Germain. Much more! I believe they will win the tie.”
"That Madrid is going through a low in the league at the moment is, in my opinion, quite normal, especially if you have won the Champions League twice and been Spanish champions too," he added to Goal.
"We want to become Bundesliga champions; we are not yet. We also want to be successful in the German Cup and in the Champions League,” he stated.
The German coach spoke of cycles and recalled, "There are always cycles in football. Recently, Real Madrid have been incredibly successful; before that, it was Barcelona in a certain period of time. Bayern Munich were in 2013 and also in previous years. So there are always snapshots.”
Heynckes has been leading the Bavarian team since November. He succeeded to lead them to the 16th round of the Champions League as Paris’ runner-up in Group B. Bayern is set to meet Besiktas in the last 16.
Under Heynckes, Bayern is also dominating the Bundesliga with 53 points on the top of the table, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen with 18 points.
