New Egyptian Olympic team Shawki Ghareeb, FILE
CAIRO – 23 January 2018: The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Tuesday that Shawki Ghareeb will be the new coach of the Egyptian football national U-23 team (Olympic team).
EFA was keen to appoint a new coach before the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, which will be held in Egypt and is a qualifier to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Shawki Ghareeb has a great coaching career in Egypt, as he was the Egyptian national youth team's coach in 2001. He also managed the first Egyptian national team in 2012 alongside a number of Egyptian football clubs like Smouha, Ismaily and El-Entag el-Harby.
EFA also appointed Ashraf Kassem as the Egyptian national U-17 team coach.
Ashraf Kassem has been the coach of other Egyptian football clubs, including Mansoura, Ghazl el-Mahalla, Telephonat Bani Sweif, Tanta and El-Dakhleya.
The Egyptian Olympic team had dropped from the group stage in the African Championship U-23, which was held in 2015, after two draws and one loss.
