CAIRO – 14 January 2018: Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah led his team to defeat Manchester City 4-3 for the first time this season in the Premier League.
Liverpool hosted Manchester City in the 23rd round of the Premier League at Anfield Stadium, where they have not tasted the bitterness of loss this season.
Liverpool, as everyone expected, was the cause of many problems to the leaders of the Premier League, as they did not repeat the other league’s teams’ mistakes.
The Reds played the way their manager, Jurgen Klopp, likes to play: pressing City’s back line – a strategy whose effectiveness was proven against City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, who was defeated by the German Klopp for the fifth time in their clashes together, mostly when Klopp coached Borussia Dortmund and Guardiola coached Bayern Munich.
Salah continued his amazing performance this season as he scored his 18th goal in the Premier League and the 24th in all the competitions.
Not content with having scored one goal, the Egyptian was the assist to his teammate, the Senegalese, Sadio Mane.
Oxlade Chamberlain took the lead in the 9th minute after he blew a shot inside, Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Ederson’s net.
In the 40th minute, City’s midfielder Leroy Sane translated his team dominance and scored a beautiful goal to level the score to 1-1.
In the second half, Roberto Firmino amazingly took advantage of City’s defender John Stones and put a lob to make it 2-1 in the 59th minute.
Two minutes later, Sadio Mane made it 3-1 in front of City’s defense watchers after an amazing assist from the Egyptian winger.
In the 68th minute, Liverpool’s pharaoh pressed and took the ball and put it above Ederson to make it 4-1.
The most optimistic football fan did not expect a score like this with twenty minutes left.
But Guardiola’s players did not surrender; they tried on numerous occasions to reduce the score. Their efforts paid off (but not enough to give them a win) when City’s midfielders Bernardo Silva and Guendogan scored two goals in five minutes, ending the game 4-3.
This loss did not affect Manchester City’s leadership as they are still on the top of the table with 62 points – ahead of their rival Manchester United by 15 points.
But they lost a great opportunity to end this season without any defeat and repeat Arsenal’s unbeaten season in 2003/2004.
Liverpool jumped to 3rd place, with 47 points, alongside Chelsea and Manchester United.
