CAIRO – 17 December 2017: Barcelona’s Argentinean striker Lionel Messi scored Barcelona’s second goal in their 2-0 victory over Villareal on Sunday, securing three points for his team.
This goal puts Messi at an equal with Gerd Muller’s long-standing record of the player with most goals with one club in the top five European Leagues, Spain, Germany, England, France and Italy.
Muller scored 525 goals with Bayern Munich between 1965 and 1979, while Messi scored the same number for Barcelona in the league since his debut with the club in 2004, and he will still likely increase that number in the years to come with his team.
Messi has broken several of Muller’s records before. In 2012, Messi scored 91 goals in one calendar year to beat Muller’s 40 years’ record of 85 goals.
Muller is one of the best strikers in soccer history, who led Germany to win the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
