CAIRO – 11 December 2017: Liverpool Egyptian winger, Mohamed Salah won BBC’s African Footballer of the Year Award. Salah received the award from his manager, Jurgen Klopp.
“I am very happy to win. It is always a special feeling when you win something. I feel like I had a great year, so I'm very happy," Salah said to BBC after receiving the award.
Salah had a fantastic year with AS Roma, scoring 10 goals, providing 2 assists to lead the club to finish second in the league and qualify to the UEFA Champions League.
Salah left Roma to join Liverpool. The player shined in the Premier League, scoring 18 goals for the team, 13 of which were in the league, to be the top scorer after 16 fixtures.
Salah added, "I would like to thank my Liverpool teammates, and I also had a good season with Roma, so I have to thank my teammates there and the ones in my national team."
Salah led Egypt’s national team to the 2018 World Cup after a 28-year absence. He scored five out of seven goal the team scored in the qualifiers.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Salah saying, "it's well-deserved. I am a really lucky person. I had the opportunity to work with a few outstanding players, and I am happy that it is now with Mo.”
Salah became the third Egyptian to win such an award after Mohamed Barakat, who won the award in 2005, and Mohamed Aboutrika, who won it in 2008.
