CAIRO –9 December 2017: On Thursday, the UEFA announced that Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal will miss the Champions League’s last-16 first-leg tie after being issued a two-game ban for appearing to deliberately pick up a booking, according to Reuters.

After not being allowed to play Wednesday's game against Borussia Dortmund, Dani Carvajal will also be out for the first leg of the 16th round of the Champions League. Real Madrid’s opponent will be known in the draw held next Monday.

In the last minutes of the fifth round group stage game, played at Apoel FC’s stadium, and with a score of 0-6 in favor of Real Madrid, Carvajal took a long time to take a throw-in, so the referee booked him.

It was his third yellow card, which meant a one-game suspension, not being able to play against Dortmund, but he would return for the knockout stages of the competition.

However, the UEFA opened a file on the Real Madrid player based on the understanding that the wasting of time had been deliberate to force that yellow card.

The resolution of the file, announced on Thursday, was to sanction Carvajal for two further matches.

Real Madrid is allowed to appeal UEFA’s decision.
