CAIRO – 2 December 2017 : The draw put Argentina alongside Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria in Group D. Argentina manager Jorge Sampaoli, promised Argentinean fans that his team will make the nation proud in the World Cup.
“The only thing I can tell our fans is that we will make Argentina proud. I also have the best player in history, that's always a plus,” Sampaoli told press after the draw.
Argentina captain, Lionel Messi secured his team a place in the World Cup after scoring a hat-trick in the last qualifiers game against Ecuador.
Sampaoli spoke about their African opponent in the group, Nigeria; stating, “Nigeria is an unpredictable side. With Nigeria you don't know who you're going to get. They're very dangerous."
Nigeria defeated Argentina 4-2 a month ago in a friendly game in Russia. Argentina was leading 2-0 before Nigeria managed to turn the game around and win it.
Sampaoli believes that their group opponent will do their best against Argentina. He said, “our opponents will go there with few obligations and a lot of enthusiasm, the World Cup has given them a unique opportunity."
