CAIRO –18 November 2017: Gianluigi “Gigi” Buffon has announced that he intends to retire at the end of this season; but with Italy's failure to qualify to the World Cup, his last game will be in Serie A.

Buffon has the opportunity to break two new records. The first is to become the most participating player in Serie A. Paolo Maldini leads the list with 647 games, while Buffon has 627 games, which means that if he plays 21 of the 26 remaining for his team in the league, he will become the most participating in the history of the Calcio.

The second number that Gigi may achieve is that he is unique in being the most crowned Scudetto. Buffon is now equal to Virginio Rosetta, Giovanni Ferrari and Pepe Forino with eight titles. If Juventus are crowned champions of the season, Buffon will be the most crowned, with nine Scudetto titles.

The 39-year-old Buffon has played the most for Italy in history, with 175 games, and he is the goalkeeper with the cleanest sheet in the history of Serie A, for 974 minutes before Maxi López's goal.
