CAIRO – 10 November 2017: Russia’s national team hosts on Saturday Lionel Messi and his Argentinean teammates in a friendly game; the game will be the first one to be played at Luzhniki Stadium after its opening.

Luzhniki Stadium was built in 1955 on the banks of Moskva River in Moscow. The stadium is considered one of the most famous sports facilities in Russia.

The stadium hosted six decades of the Russian national team’s games, Spartak Moscow and CSKA Moscow reported.

The game hosted many huge events through history like the 1980 Summer Olympic games and 2008 UEFA Champions League final, when Manchester United defeated Chelsea on a penalty-shootout to win the title.

The stadium’s capacity is 81,000; however, its stand held 102,000 fans who attended the USSR’s game against Italy in 1963.

The stadium was destroyed in 2013 in order to be rebuilt to host the games of the 2018 World Cup. Luzhniki Stadium will host the opening game in the World Cup on June 14.
