Former Italian football player and 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year Fabio Cannavaro smiles during a news conference in Phnom Penh January 9, 2012.
Cairo - 10 November 2017: Fabio Cannavaro returns with honors to the Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrandeas. He was introduced as a new coach on Thursday, replacing his predecessor Luiz Filipe Scolari.
The 44-year-old had previously been in charge at Guangzhou, replacing Marcello Lippi at the end of 2014, but was fired seven months later and replaced by Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Cannavaro resigned on Monday from his position as head coach of Tianjin Quanjian after he helped his team advance to the third place in their first season in the Chinese super league.
"After a request was submitted by Fabio Cannavaro and following discussions between both parties, Tianjin Quanjian agreed that Cannavaro will not continue to be the head coach of the club," Tianjin said in a statement on Monday.
Cannavaro’s position in Tianjin will be occupied by the Portuguese Paulo Sousa, who left in July. This all happened after ruling out the possible return of Wanderley Luxemburgo, who, precisely, replaced Cannavaro in June 2016.
Cannavaro was promoted in two years to the First Division and qualified for the Asian Champions League.
Xu Jiaying, a multimillionaire local businessman and the club owner, stated that the former player of Juventus and Real Madrid "is ready to follow the path" of recent years.
Paulinho left the Chinese club and headed to Barcelona, signing with the Spanish team in August.
