CAIRO – 31 October 2017: The former Manchester United player Gary Neville has come up against the criticism that Jose Mourinho is receiving from some of Manchester’s fans, who do not like the Portuguese’s style in football.
Neville defended Mourinho and compared him to world boxing star Floyd Mayweather.
"Mourinho is a tactical master like Mayweather and the Manchester fans have to get used to a style that they consider negative," the former United player said.
"Mourinho is beating his opponents on the field in the same way that Mayweather knocks down his rivals in the ring."
"Some United supporters are disappointed because the early and exciting early-season football the team was playing has been replaced by a more defensive and tactical one, like the one seen in the Tottenham victory on Saturday, but United won," says Neville.
Mourinho used a tactical play called "parking the bus" as he put most of the players in the defending line.
Neville compared Mourinho's approach to the 'Spurs' to Mayweather style in the ring: "Floyd often just avoids being hit by his opponents and wears them out, and so he has 50 unbeaten fights. Many times, like Mourinho, they called him boring for using the defense as a weapon and letting the other one get tired."
"Mourinho deserves more respect. After beating Tottenham, Mourinho silenced the people with a gesture that meant ‘I'll do it my way and we'll win,’” Neville concluded.
