CAIRO – 30October 2017: Rafael Márquez, accused by the United States government of being the front man for a drug lord, returned Saturday to the field with the Mexican club Atlas. He returned after almost three months after the accusations were made public.
Márquez, 38-years-old, started the match and played the full 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw against Querétaro. The match was played at La Corregidora stadium in Querétaro, on the fifteenth round of the Mexican Open.
By midweek, Barcelona's ex-player had already been called up for the second round of the 2017 Apertura MX Cup against Chivas de Guadalajara.
The defender played as captain of the team, which is looking to move through the ranks and win the league title.
With this draw Atlas amassed 20 points and is in ninth place, just one point behind Cruz Azul. They played an outstanding game in the eighth round.
It was the fourth game in the tournament for Márquez, who before that game played in the third round, in the 3-2 loss to Toluca on August 6.
Márquez was absent from the field to defend himself against the accusation of the United States government, and on September 18 he returned to train with his current team. He intends to keep in good shape while continuing his legal process in the United States.
On August 9, the United States Government accused Márquez, singer Julión Álvarez and 20 other Mexicans of being the front men of Raúl Flores Hernández, a drug trafficker related to the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels.
