CAIRO – 20 October 2017: Icelandic attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson believes that Iceland’s national team can make it to the knockut stage in their first World Cup participation.

“We’ll have to see what sort of group we get, but I think we’ll have a good chance of making it through the group stage, “Sigurdsson told FIFA website.

Sigurdsson revealed his feelings after the qualification: “it was a fantastic feeling. It’s something we’ve all been waiting to see happen to Icelandic football to actually go to the World Cup."

Sigurdsson, 28, spoke about the leap in Icelandic football in the last few years by saying, “I think over the last four or five years we’ve been playing in really big games. With the play-offs for the World Cup in Brazil, the games leading up to the EURO, then the EURO itself and now as well. It seems like all the games we’ve been playing lately have been important for us.”

Iceland lost in the 2014 World Cup playoffs to Croatia, but they took their revenge in 2018 when they qualified directly to the World Cup, leaving Croatia in second place.
