CAIRO –11 October 2017-Ivory Coast’s emerging star player, Georges Griffiths, died in a car heist on a visit to Abidjan when he was hit by carjackers on Thursday.
Griffiths, who has played for Sparta Prague and Diosgyor, was shot dead in Ivory Coast.
The 26-year-old was attacked in the capital’s upmarket suburb of Cocody. The attackers had attempted to steal Griffiths’ Mercedes 4×4 and shot him when he refused to hand it over, The Sun newspaper reported.
He was rushed to hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.
He was once touted as the next Drogba after winning three caps for the Elephants at U23 in 2011 after scoring once in three games and secured a loan move to Sparta Prague. He joined Lombard-Papa in 2013.
After one year, Griffiths joined rivals Diosgyor and spent three seasons with them. He scored 8 goals in 34 apps with them.
