CAIRO – 9 October 2017: FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised on Monday Argentinian legends, Lionel Messi and Diego Armando Maradona, during an interview with Argentinian Magazine La Nacion.
“What made Diego so special to football for me is that he made us all fall in love with the game, of course he also won a World Cup," Infantino told La Nacion.
Maradona led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title after defeating West Germany 3-2 to win their second World Cup in history.
Infantino praised Argentina’s current captain Lionel Messi saying, "Messi is extraordinary, Messi still has to win a World Cup, we have a lot of great players who did not win the World Cup."
Messi is suffering with his national team to qualify to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as they have to win over Ecuador in Quito on Wednesday to keep their chances of qualifying.
Ingantino commented on Argentina’s difficult situation saying, “He may be there, we may see him in 2022, it seems that he never gets injured, even if players want to foul him, they can't get near."
