CAIRO – 5 October 2017: It is not easy to join your national team from a club just promoted to the first division, but what is really difficult is to join the national team after you suffered from Cancer.

Every football fan in Tunisia waits for the decisive match on Saturday against Guinea at the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, but no one awaits this game more than Tunisian defender Walid Hichri.

Hichri was a regular defender for theTunisia national team and Tunisia’s biggest team, Esperance, and he won the CAF Champions League 2011 with the club.

Hichri left Esperance in 2013 to join AS Marsa, which was considered a backward step, but destiny had its opinion in that transfer.

Only months after Hichri’s transfer to AS Marsa, the news came out to shock the football world in Tunisia – Walid is suffering from cancer at the age of just 28.

AS Marsa stood behind the player, supporting him financially and psychologically. Walid’s decision was clear that he will fight the beat the cancer and will return again to playing football.

Only three months later, it was announced that Hichri had recovered, and after six months from his diagnosis, he was on the pitch wearing AS Marsa’s jersey again and ready to play football.

Hichri continued his journey with football till he joined US Monastir in 2016. The team was running at second division, but Hichri led the team to the first division, and he had amazing performances with his club this season that allowed him to rejoin the national team again.

There are many great footballers on the field, but not all of them can fight off the field more than on it.
