CAIRO –2 October 2017: Darren Ferguson is the son of Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, who has been in the club for more than 20 years. Darren is the current head coach of Doncaster Rovers, which is playing in League One and faced Arsenal in the 32nd round of the EFL Cup.
His career as a player:
The 45-year-old Scottish national former player played as center midfielder, and spent his career in several clubs, including Manchester United from 1990 to 1994. At Manchester he participated in 27 games at the 1992/1993 season without scoring a single goal. He then moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers for about five years, playing 117 league games scoring four goals.
He moved to Sparta Rotterdam and spent one year participating in 14 games in the Dutch league, scoring a single goal. He then moved to Wrexham, where he spent nearly eight years playing 310 matches in the league, scoring 51 goals. He moved to Peterborough United in 2007 to retire later without taking part in any match.
Career as coach:
He started his coaching career in 2007 with Peterborough United after Keith Alexander was sacked. He led the club to a 10th-place finish in his first season of management. In his first full season of management, Darren won second place in League Two to move to League One to continue with the club. Then he led Peterborough to second place and earned an automatic promotion to the Championship after achieving second place in League One.
He moved to the Preston North End training in January 2010, but the start was hard for the coach, as his first match was against Chelsea in the FA Cup, which he lost 2-0. Darren coached the club for 49 games, winning 13 games, earning a draw in 12 games and losing 24 games, before being sacked in December 2010 after the club finished last in the championship.
In January 2011, Ferguson returned to Peterborough United for a four-and-a-half-year contract. Ferguson finished fourth in League One to qualify for the playoffs or qualifiers to the championship to beat Huddersfield Town and qualify again for the championship, to spend only two seasons in the championship. Later, the team fell to League One after losing to Crystal Palace 3-2. The team had 54 and became the team with the highest points to relegate from the championship in the history of the tournament. He ended his contract with the club after the team finished 15th in League One in February 2015.
He later moved to Doncaster Rovers in October 2015, qualifying to League One at the end of the 2016/2017 season when he finished third in League Two.
