West Ham United, the club that Mexican striker Javier Hernandez “Chicharito” plays for, will auction all match-worn shirts from Saturday's London derby against Tottenham Hotspurs this weekend to raise funds to help earthquake victims in Mexico.
It is reported that it will double the profits obtained, which will be donated to the initiative “YoXMexico”, whose purpose is to deliver food and supplies through the “Red Cross and Los Topos”, an organization specializing in the cleaning of debris.
"We have all been moved by the news and the devastating effects of Tuesday's earthquake in Mexico. While disasters such as this may seem far away, it is important that we continue to help where we can," said David Sullivan, West Ham’s co-chairman told West Ham`s website.
"Javier has joined forces with Miguel Layún to raise funds to help his compatriots in this time of need, and we are confident that this auction will be able to raise a significant amount for his initiative," he added.
"Although it is only a small gesture of the club, we will double any amount obtained by the auction, which we hope may make a small difference for the people of Mexico," he stressed.
Some shirts that the players will wear in the meeting are already on sale, such as the “Chicharito” shirt, which today is valued at auction at £2,500 pounds ($3,374).
The Mexican international wrote on Instagram: "It's time to help, and I would like to announce the initiative @YoXMex. Only together can we move forward. People around the world, I would ask you to help the people of my country. We need a lot of help after what happened. You can donate in the link in my bio. Thank you all!”
"Being so far away from Mexico and seeing the suffering of our compatriots in the distance has been very painful. So, after talking about it, we decided to take the initiative for Mexico and help our people," Chicharito said.
