Cairo – 23 September 2017: Argentina guaranteed a spot at the 2017 Copa Libertadores final as Argentinian clubs River Plate and Lanus will meet at the tournament’d semi finals. Brazil and Ecuador will compete for the other spot as Brazilian club Gremio faces Barcelona S.C. from Ecuador.

River Plate qualified to the semi finals after a stunning comeback at their stadium, Monumental in Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires, against Bolivian club C.D. Jorge Wilstermann.

River Plate lost the first leg in Bolivia 3-0, but they managed to win the second leg 8-0. River striker Ignacio Scocco scored five goals in the match.

North of the capital, Lanus defeated their neighbors San Lorenzo 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The latter won the first leg, but Lanus managed to equalize the score with the same result in the second leg.

In Brazil, Lucas Barrios led Gremio to the semi finals after beating Botafogo at home 1-0, the first leg ended 0-0.

Barcelona S.C. returned from Brazil with a ticket to the semi finals as they won over Brazilian club Santos 1-0, thanks to Jonathan Alvez’s goal. The first leg in Ecuador had ended 1-1.

It is worth mentioning that River Plate won the title three times, and Gremio won it twice. Barcelona S.C. and Lanus never did.
