Mohamed Elshorbagy Seizes Victory at 2014 Hong Kong Squash Open

The Egyptian squash player comes out on top at the Hong Kong Open, defeating world number-one Gregory Gaultier

Egyptian squash player Mohamed Elshorbagy took the top spot at the 2014 Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open on August 31, beating out French player Gregory Gaultier by winning 11-9, 11-2, 4-11, 8-11, 11-4 in a 97 minute game. This was the second time Elshorbagy defeated Gaultier, after besting him at the El Gouna International earlier in 2014. Gaultier, playing in his fifth Hong Kong final, suffered an ankle injury in the final stage of the game. After a 15-minute rest period, Elshorbagy was able to beat out his opponent and claim victory with ease. "It was my first final here and to win is something that I will remember for the rest of my life,” Elshorbagy told the press. “I would say that this is the most important win of my career so far." Born in Alexandria and currently based in Bristol, England, Elshorbagy is currently number 3 is the PSA world rankings, two spots behind Gaultier, and is the current Qatar Classic champion. Elshorbagy first joined the Professional Squash Association in 2006 at the age of 15. He is the second man, following in the footsteps of fellow Egyptian squash player Ramy Ashour, to win the World Junior Squash Championships twice, in 2008 and 2009.
