CAIRO – 3 September 2017: Former English Captain, Wayne Rooney revealed on Sunday that he has no intention to play again for his national team.
“My mind is made up. I have seen it a few times where players have come out of retirement and gone to tournaments and it's not right," Rooney spoke during an interview with Talksport.
England’s national team manager, Gareth Southgate left the door open for Wayne Rooney to return to the national team but Rooney insisted he will not wear England’s jersey again.
Rooney, 31, added: “The lads who are trying to qualify for Russia will be the players that deserve to play in the tournament. So my decision has been made."
Asked about his desire to coach the national team after retirement, Rooney answered, “England manager - you never know, I'd love to go into management. I'm doing my badges now and I think it would be a waste to have the knowledge I've picked up over the years and not have a go at it.”
Rooney is England’s top scorer with 53 goals in 119 games.
