Egypt U-23 national team booked their place in the semi-finals of the Olympics football competition, having defeated Paraguay 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the quarter-finals.

The Pharaohs are back to the semi-finals for the first time since 1964 when they finished fourth in the Rome Olympic Games.

After conceding a goal in the second half that could put an end to the Pharaohs' Olympic journey, Rogerio Micale's boys forced their way back into the game with a late equalizer by Ibrahim Adel.

Adel was under the spot again when he scored the last penalty kick of the game to send his team to the semi-finals, following an incredible save from Egypt's goalkeeper, Hamza Alaa, to one of the Paraguayan penalty kicks.

"We are currently writing history, focusing on achieving a medal for our Egyptian people. This has been our goal from the beginning, and we thank God that we are one step closer to that." Egypt's defender, Karim El Debes, said after the match.

The Pharaohs will have another challenge on Monday when they face the hosts, France, guided by their legend, Thierry Henry, in the competition's semi-finals.
